Overview of John
*if you guys want a copy of the slide show, pls let me know ok?

# Author: John, a disciple of Jesus
# Aim of writing this gospel: establish that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; evangelistic
# Outline: abt Jesus' ministry. 2-12 (public ministry) 13-end (private ministry with disciples)

Understand that each of the gospel writer was not trying to write a biography of Jesus but through their selection of events, try to paint a potrait of Jesus that they met personally.

Why do we need to study the gospel of John?
# to be convinced that Jesus is the son of God, our Messiah
# to be able to evangelise to others with conviction
# to come to know this Jesus that we worship. When you know Jesus, then can you start falling in love with Him and be motivated to build a relationship with Him.

For the following weeks, come and meet this Jesus that John encountered!

Nxt CG 3 Oct: Bring ur orange booklet and do the questions for John Study 1

What it means to be a Christian Part III
This is the final session of what it means to be a Christian

So what distinguishes us Christians from other pple?
We believe in Jesus, that He was sent by God to die for our sins, that through this faith, we will not perish but have eternal life

Yes, so by faith we are justified, but is that enough? Is it enough as a Christian to just believe?

James 2:17, 20-22 says it is not enough
17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. 20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

Our faith as a Christian should be both spiritual and practical: the spiritual aspect is when we believe in God, and the practical aspect has to do with our daily living for God.

Being a Christian is a journey, a process of becoming Christ-like.
Hebrews 12:1-2 shows us that being a Christian is like running a race, with Jesus as our focus
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This verse also shows that
believing in Jesus does not automatically make us perfect because we are still in the flesh.

As we are in our flesh, we are always able to be tempted because of the power of free will. When Jesus came to earth as man, He too was able to be tempted. BUT he was still holy and righteous in the eyes of God because of the choices He made, and because he always kept doing God’s will as his focus.

But of course, we all make bad choices and sin, but aren’t we already saved from the punishment of sin by believing in Jesus?
Yes, sin does not rob us of our salvation, but it does rob us of our joy in our r/s with God.

How can we not live a life of sin? By choosing to live according to the Spirit of God, whom Jesus has promised to us:
John 14:16-17, 26
16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Romans 8:5-16
5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man[
e] is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the sinful mind[f] is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.[
g] And by him we cry, "Abba,[h] Father." 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

As children of God, we have the Holy Spirit to lead us, and we do not have to rely on our own strength. The Holy Spirit inside of you will teach you how to speak to God.
Do you know what it means to experience the joy of the Lord?
The Holy Spirit in you will show you how to reach out to God. You only need to take the first step and start speaking to God with your heart.
Romans 8:26-27
26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

Sunday, September 24, 2006

Hey guys, I received this e-mail from a friend of mine who lives in New Zealand. It's really inspiring and I was hoping to share it with you all. It samples a conversation between a woman and the Lord. The words of the Lord's Prayer are written in Bold Yellow.

Our Father which art in heaven,

Yes?

Don't interrupt me. I'm praying.

But you called me

Called You?
I didn't call You.
I'm praying. "Our Father which art in heaven,"

There. You did it again

Did what?

Called me.
You said, "Our Father which art in heaven."Here I am.
What's on your mind?

But I didn't mean anything by it.
I was, You know, just saying my prayers for the day.
I always say the Lord's Prayer.
It makes me feel good, kind of like getting a duty done.

All right. Go on.

Hallowed be Thy name.

Hold it.
What do you mean by that?

By what?

By "Hallowed be Thy name?"

It means. . . uhhh. . . It means. . .
Good grief, I don't know what it means.
How should I know? It's just a part of the prayer.
By the way, what does it mean?

It means honored, holy and consecrated.

Hey that makes sense.
I never thought about what "hallowed" meant before.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Do you really mean that?

Sure. Why not?

What are you doing about it?

Doing?
Nothing. . . I guess.
I just think it would be kind of neat if You got control of everything down here like You have up there.

Have I got control of you?

Well, I go to church.

That isn't what I asked you.
What about your temper?
You've really got a problem there, you know.
And then there's the way you spend your money - all on yourself.
And what about the kinds of books you read and what you watch on TV?

Stop picking on me!
I'm just as good as the rest of those people at church.

Excuse me.
I thought you were praying for MY will to be done.
If that is to happen, it will have to start with the ones who are praying for it.
Like you, for example.

Oh, all right. I guess I do have some hang-ups.
Now that You mention it, I could probably name some others.

So could I.

I haven't really thought about it very much until now, but I'd really like to cut out some of those things.
I would like to, You know, be really free.

Good.
Now we're getting somewhere.
We'll work together, you and I.
Some victories can be truly won.
I'm proud of you.

Look, Lord, I need to finish this up here.
This is taking a lot longer than it usually does . . .
Give us this day our daily bread.

You could cut out the bread.
It would help you lose weight.

Hey, wait a minute!
What is this . . . Criticize ME Day?
Here I was doing my religious duty and all of a sudden You break in and remind me of all my hang-ups.

Praying is a dangerous thing.
You could wind up changed, you know.
That's what I'm trying to get across to you.
Keep praying.I'm interested in the next part of your prayer.
Well, go on.

I'm scared to.

Scared?
Of what?

I know what You'll say.

Try Me and see.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

What about Ann?

See!?
I knew it!
I knew You would bring her up!
Lord, she's told lies about me, spread stories about my family.
She never paid back the money she owes me.
I've sworn to get even with her.

But your prayer?
What about your prayer?

I didn't mean it.

Well, at least you're honest.
But it's not much fun carrying that load of bitterness inside you, is it?

No.
But, I'll feel better as soon as I get even.
Boy, have I got some plans for that neighbor.
She'll wish she had never moved into this neighborhood.

You won't feel any better.
You'll feel worse.
Revenge isn't sweet.
Think of how unhappy you already are.
But, I can change all that.

You can?
How?

Forgive Ann.
Then, I'll forgive you.
Then the hate and sin will be Ann's problem and not yours.
You will have settled your heart.

Oh, You're right.
You always are.
And, more than I want to get revenge against Ann, I want to be right with You.
But . . . (pause) . . . (sigh) . . . All right. I forgive her.
Help her to find the right road in life, Lord.
She's bound to be awfully miserable now that I think about it.
Anybody who goes around doing the things she does to others, has to be out of it.
Someway, somehow, show her the right way.

There now!
Wonderful! How do you feel?

Hmmmm.
Well, not bad. Not bad at all.
I feel pretty great. You know, I don't think I'll have to go to bed uptight tonight for the first time since I can remember.
Maybe I won't be so tired from now on because I'm not getting enough rest.

You're not through with your prayers.
Go on.

Oh, all right.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Good! Good! I'll do just that.
Just don't put yourself in a place where you can be tempted.

What do You mean by that?

Don't turn the TV on when you know the laundry needs to be done and the house needs to be picked up.
Also about the time you spend with your friends, if you can't influence the conversation to positive things, perhaps you should rethink the value of those friendships.
Another thing, your neighbors and friends shouldn't be your standard for "keeping up."
And please don't use Me as an escape hatch.

I don't understand that last part.

Sure you do.
You've done it lots of times.
You get caught in a bad situation, you get in trouble and then you come running to Me:
"Lord, help me out of this mess, and I promise You, I'll never do it again."
You remember some of those bargains you tried to make with Me?

Yes, and I'm ashamed, Lord.
I really am.

Which bargain are you remembering?

Well, there was the night that my husband was gone and the children and I were home alone. The wind was blowing so hard I thought the roof would go any minute and tornado warnings were out.
I remember saying,
"Oh, God, if You spare us, I'll never skip my devotions again."

I protected you, but you didn't keep your promise, did you?

I'm sorry, Lord. I really am.
Up until now I thought that if I just prayed the Lord's Prayer every day, then I could do what I liked.
I didn't expect anything to happen like this.

Go ahead and finish your prayer.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
A-men.

Do you know what would bring Me glory?
What would really make Me happy?

No, but I'd like to know.
I want to please You.
I can see what a mess I've made of my life.
And I can see how great it would be to really be one of Your followers.

You just answered the question.

I did?

Yes. The thing that would bring Me glory is to have people like you truly love Me.
And I see that happening between us.
Now that some of these old sins are exposed and out of the way, there is no telling what we can do together.

Lord, let's see what we can make of me, OK?

Yes, let's see.

Don't just repeat the Lord's Prayer, PRAY the Lord's Prayer

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. - Matthew 6:7.

Hope you guys got some inspiration from this passage! Have a great week ahead!

Love,

Julian

hi guys=)

here's just a lil story...**some of you may have read it before**

I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, "This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received." I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world. Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.

The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them." I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Acknowledgment Section," my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed "How is it that? There's no work going on here?" I asked.

"So sad," the angel sighed. "After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments.

"How does one acknowledge God's blessings?" I asked. "

Simple," the angel answered.

"Just say, "Thank you, Lord."

"What blessings should they acknowledge?" I asked.

"If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep ... you are richer than 75% of this world."

"If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy."

"If you woke up this morning with more health than illness .... you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day."

"If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ... you are ahead of 700 million people in the world."

"If you can attend a church meeting without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death ... you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world."

"If your parents are still alive and still married ..you are very rare. If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you are unique to all those in doubt and despair."

** dear all, let us not forget to give thanks everyday to God everyday!=)

love,
deborah

Hey guys, I've been reading this series of christian science fiction books, and I think it's quite interesting. If you can find time off from your busy schedule (well, I know mine is), perhaps you can try borrowing these books and take a look at it. It's called the Left Behind series, authored by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, and I think some of you have probably heard of it. It deals with the prophecies in the Book of Revelation, regarding the end times. I've not yet finished the entire series, so far I've only arrived at the 5th book out of 12, but I'm so captivated by the storyline that I can't wait to read more! The first book might seem a bit dry, but from the second book onwards, the pace of the story picks up.

The book starts off with the event known as the 'rapturing of the church', where Christ takes all the believers off the face of the earth. In an instant, the all Christians and children under the age of 12 vanish immediately off the face of the earth. in the resulting chaos, a aspiring politician from Romania who is the antichrist rises to prominence with his extraordinary ability to charm and persuade people. He soon uses his unique ability to make himself the president of Romania, followed by appointment as the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Following that, he reinvents the UN, calling it the Global Community (or, GC), and relocates its headquarters to a city in Iraq called New Babylon. At the same time, Israel has risen to become the richest nation in the world, due to the invention of a scientific formula which allows crops to grow anywhere in the world, be it in tundra regions or desert sands. As a result of it's invention, many nations are jealous of Israel and Russia goes to the extent of declaring war on them. Israeli military forces are caught unawares by the Russian attack, but in an obvious act of divine intervention, meteors fall from the sky, totally annihillating the Russian army, but at the same time not a single Jewish soldier is harmed. The antichrist, being the deceiver that he is, offers Israel a seven-year peace treaty (whereby Israel comes under the protection of the Global Community) in exchange for the magic formula. This peace treaty ushers in the start of the period of tribulation, which will last for seven years and will see 3/4 of the earth's population wiped out by divine judgements, until the glorious reappearing of Jesus Christ.

In the midst of all the chaos, a group of those who were left behind after the rapture (hence the title of the series), band together to form the Tribulation Force. With only the Bible as their guide, they learn what they must do to confront the antichrist and at the same time bring as many of their friends into Christ before it is too late.

For those who want to read the book, I think you can borrow it from the Central Library, or any of the NLB libraries.

Here's a picture of the cover of the first few books in the series:

Yup, that's all for now, going to sleep soon.

Regards,

Julian

Living for God

Hey pple,
Sorry for this late summary… been caught up with some stuff…eh mabbe I shld get one of u to do this summary every wk! *beams

I really wanna thank God that we could have cg even though there was so many activities going on that clashed with cg timing. Kinda made me think how easy it is to say God comes first before hall, but when the time to make the decision, it is so hard still. I wonder why.
Anw, glad to have it despite everything…plus we can celebrate deborah’s super belated birthday and have yummy cake! =p

1. Ice Breaker
Kinda skipped this cos we started v late…well do interact with each other outside cg ya…meet more often = build stronger relationships!

2. Worship
Thanks deb & liwei for leading us in a wonderful time of worship!

3. CG Affairs
§ CG booklet: $2 (pls pay me asap!) this is the material that we’ll be using for the whole yr. bring it to every cg!

4. Bible Study
What it means to be a Christian Part II
Had a discussion on another aspect of being a Christian: Living for God
As Christians:
We are accountable to God only

God shld come first in our lives (does He really?)

We make sacrifices for Him in our lives
- does this make being a Christian very hard?
- If so, why do you still continue to be a Christian?
- What kind of sacrifices have you made?

We live according to His will
- God's will is written in the bible, do you know what are His expectations for u?
- What are some of his instructions for us?

Bible Verse 1 Peter 4
1Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. 2As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. 5But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
7The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. 8Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 11If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Where else in the bible does it tell you how God expects you to live as a Christian?
Bring some verses for cg 12 Sept!

CG 29 Aug
My Father is the Creator of Heaven and Earth!

Hey pple,
Here’s a brief summary on what we did during cg:

1. ICE BREAKER
7-up: a great test of concentration and MATHS (yucky)…deb made it more complicated by setting a rule that we had to say one of the 4 books of the gospel when the number was a multiple of 7 or had 7 in it. Funny thing was that deb ended up doing the forfeit cos she very blur. Haha. Chun also kena forfeit cos very blur. N poor josh who came in late got sabo-ed cos he had no idea what was happening. Hee hee. Forfeit was to sing “With Christ in the vessel” together with all the actions. It was hilarious seeing chun learn the action…esp when the tempo got faster n faster =)

2. WORSHIP

Did Sunday school songs with all the actions. I thot it was very fun! Don’t u guys all agree? *beams
§ I love u Jesus deep down in my heart
§ With Christ in the vessel

3. CG AFFAIRS

§ update on blog: pple just post anything u want!! Make this blog as lively as possible (hopefully related to Christianity)
§ Prayer partner: each person to have a prayer partner each week. To remember to pray for ur partner during quiet time.
§ CG notebooks: for taking down notes during bs, prayer partner's request

4. BIBLE STUDY

What it means to be a Christian Part I
Had a discussion abt what being a Christian meant to pple in cg. Some of the answers were:
§ Most blessed
§ Children of God
§ Believe that Christ died for our sins so that we can go to heaven and have everlasting life
§ Being a Christian is a choice
§ What we do or say is very impt because we are Christ’s representatives on earth – do things for the glory of God

Focus of this wk:
Christians as belonging to Jesus, children of God
Some verses in the bible that indicates that we are children of God:

John 1:12
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

Galatians 3:26-28
26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 4:1-7
1What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. 4But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba,[
a] Father." 7So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

The fact that we are children of God highlights the importance of relationship with our God. He is not meant to be someone distant, high n mighty in heaven, but someone personal and close to us.

To be close to God, it is impt to build r/s with Him. Just like how human relationships are build through spending time with the person, our relationship with God can only be built if we spend time with him, not just on a Sunday but everyday. We can pray, read the bible, sing to Him etc. Reading the bible is one way to understand the heart of God and understand His will and His expectations for u as his child. It is also not enuf to just talk to Him, but also try listening to what He has to say to u.

It is also impt to acknowledge Him as our heavenly Father and acknowledge that we belong to Him. Are you proud of your identity as a Christian and a heavenly Father who is the creator of Heaven and Earth? (not the green tea la!)

Nxt week 5 Sept: What it means to live as a Christian
Read & Reflect: 1 Peter 4

Come with ur personal insights / more verses so that we can have a fruitful sharing!

hugz,

cherlyn
